In 1997, Iris Goldschmidt opened Airport Wireless and began selling wireless phones and accessories from a small merchandise cart in Terminal B of the Philadelphia International Airport. In 1998, a small in-line Airport Wireless store was opened in Philadelphia International Airport's main shopping area. It was a resounding success. Leveraging the success in Philadelphia additional locations were opened in Cleveland Hopkins and Newark Liberty International Airports.
In 2003, Airport Wireless was approached with an opportunity to operate a new retail concept in conjunction with Palm Inc. Palm was seeking an experienced airport operator with an excellent customer service record, and the employee caliber necessary to convey their high-tech products to sophisticated customers. After signing an exclusive agreement to operate Palm's airport locations, Airport Wireless Palm became the leading wireless and mobile electronics retailer in airports across the country.
Despite Palm’s unfortunate ending, the now re-branded APW Brands grew to over 50 specialty electronics stores. FlyBy Sports is the newest concept from APW Brands. Utilizing our unique understanding of developing and operating retail concepts that work in airport environments.
Iris’ duties include negotiation of major contracts, oversight of new space selection and WDBE certification.
While working on APW Brands’ retail electronics concepts, Miguel was the primary liaison with the world’s leading technology manufacturers. Miguel monitored the constant evolution of technology and solidified relationships with those key vendors.
While he will continue his involvement with the retail electronics concepts, Miguel is a key player in FlyBy Sports. His specialties remain vendor partnerships, marketing and operations. APW Brands believes in growing talent and career advancement within the organization and Miguel is the perfect example.
As Executive Vice President for APW Brands, Kim has been responsible for contract negotiations, any and all growth opportunities and acting as the liaison between our organization and airport management for the past four years.
With the launch of FlyBy Sports, Kim will continue with these roles and together with Miguel, be responsible for all store operations.
In the 20 years prior to APW, Kim spent her time acquiring extensive experience in airports with AIRMALL USA, Inc. (formerly BAA USA, Inc.). In her capacity as AIRMALL’s Business Development Manager, she was involved in all areas of business development, including proposal development and contract awards. She was also actively engaged in the operational start-up of new contracts in Baltimore, Boston and Cleveland. In addition, she oversaw marketing and public relations for the company.
